What CPM measures

CPM stands for cycles per minute. It is a measurement of how quickly a shaft vibrates when you clamp one end, pull the other down, and let it spring back. A frequency analyzer counts those oscillations and reports the number. A shaft that vibrates faster is stiffer; one that vibrates slower is softer.

That is the whole concept. Higher CPM, stiffer shaft. Lower CPM, softer shaft. Because it is a physical count rather than a word, it lets you compare two shafts directly even when their printed flex letters disagree.

How a frequency analyzer works

The shaft, or the whole assembled club, gets locked into a heavy clamp near the butt end with a set weight on the tip. You deflect the tip, release it, and the machine times the oscillations to produce a CPM reading. The clamp pressure, clamp position, and tip weight are all standardized, because change any of them and the number changes. That is why shop-to-shop readings only match when the setup matches.

This repeatability is the point. Two builders using the same method will get the same CPM from the same club, which is something the flex letter can never promise.

Why CPM beats the flex letter

There is no industry standard behind flex letters. One company's regular can measure stiffer than another's stiff, and even within a single model the flex can drift from batch to batch. A golfer who trusts the letter can end up in two "stiff" shafts that play a full flex apart and never understand why one felt like a noodle.

Frequency across a set

CPM really earns its keep across a set of irons. Ideally, stiffness steps up in even increments from your longest iron to your shortest, so each club loads and feels like a sibling of the last. When the slope has a spike or a dip, one club feels off, and you notice it as a mishit that has nothing to do with your swing. Builders can nudge the number by adjusting shaft length in small increments, a practice called soft stepping and hard stepping, to smooth the slope out. Frequency matching a set is one of the quietest, most underrated upgrades in fitting.

What CPM does not tell you

Here is the honest limit. CPM measures overall stiffness at one clamp condition. It does not describe where along the shaft the stiffness lives. Two shafts can post the same CPM and still feel different, because one is stiffer in the tip and softer in the butt while the other is the reverse.
