Pick up any driver shaft spec sheet and you will see a torque number sitting next to weight and flex. It is usually somewhere between 2 and 6 degrees, and almost nobody explains what it means. Here is the plain-language version, and an honest take on how much it should influence your next shaft.

What torque actually measures

Torque is how far a shaft twists around its own axis when a rotational force is applied to the tip. Picture holding the grip still and wringing the head end like a towel. A shaft rated at 3 degrees of torque twists less under that force than one rated at 5.

Why does a golf shaft twist at all? Because the clubhead's weight does not sit in line with the shaft. It hangs out behind and away from it. As you swing down and the face closes through impact, that offset mass tries to rotate the shaft, and the shaft gives a little. Torque is the measure of how much.

What it changes in your shots

Less than the marketing suggests, and more than nothing. The clearest effect is on off-center hits. When you strike the ball toward the toe or heel, the impact itself tries to twist the head. Strong, fast swingers usually prefer the stability of low torque because a lively shaft at their speed feels loose and hard to time. Smoother, slower swings often score better with a bit more torque because an ultra-stable shaft can feel like swinging a rebar.

Why you rarely pick torque by itself

Here is the part spec sheets gloss over: torque travels with the rest of the design. Heavier, stiffer, tour-profile shafts tend to have low torque. Lighter, softer, higher-launching shafts tend to have more. That is partly physics and partly intent, because the golfer who needs a 50 gram senior-flex shaft generally benefits from the smoother feel that comes with it.

So when you compare two shafts and one has lower torque, you are almost never comparing torque alone. You are comparing two whole designs.
